MARIE SOPHIE LOCKHART, NEW YORK USA
FOUNDER OF LOCKHART EMBROIDERY
ON LOVE & SPIRITUALITY
If you have ever been in the presence of my good friend Marie, you too would know what it feels like to be in the light of someone who lives so honestly and carefree.
Not only is she the incredible creative hands behind Lockhart Embroidery, she is also someone who has gifted me with many good conversations and laughter. I felt it necessary to not only have Belle Luna Vie be a platform for conversations surrounding nutrition and holistic healing but also felt it important to broaden my vision and include conversations surrounding other spiritual pathways whether that be travelling, drugs or unlocking new areas of the mind through the art of just living in the present.
I FIND MORNING RITUALS AND HOW ONE CHOOSES TO START THE DAY BOTH IMPORTANT AND INTERESTING. WALK US THROUGH YOUR MORNINGS?
I wake up at around 8am every morning and I go to my little studio and check my emails before I start the day. I will start preparing some of my orders and then go to this coffee shop few blocks away from my house and start with a coffee and a croissant. I normally make sure to stay and eat at the shop because I like to separate the eating with working and its a good way to start and centre myself for the day. I do eat pretty fast though and then I hurry back to the studio to start making my orders till I have to go and get ready to work at the bar later in the afternoon.
DOES YOUR MORNINGS DIFFER ON YOUR DAYS OFF?
I try and work hard during the week so I can stay on top of my orders and give myself the weekend off to spend time with my husband Chris. My morning routine will then start with making breakfast and cooking together, usually something simple like a vegetable omelet with rice or Mexican food.
I would like to have more of a morning ritual but because I live in New York, its hard to find time to meditate so thats why its important for me to travel. I am about to leave on a month long trip to Nepal in a couple of days with my husband and it will be really good for me because it gives me a chance to regroup and adapt myself to new rituals and routines that may be out of my comfort zone. In New York, things can get repetitive quite quickly so I find I have to keep life in balance by traveling to really different places like Jamaica, Nepal and back to Paris etc.
IS IT IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO KEEP TRAVELLING?
Yeah, I don't know I've been traveling since I finished university and can't see living my life any other way. I like to meet new people and see different cultures and cities - I have never been able to stay in one place for too long but in having said that its weird that New York has been the one city I enjoy calling home and coming home too. Its just New York you know? You hate it but you love it at the same time.
My mother was always like, "Marie you always travel and you never save or put any money to the side". And its true, but I'm always going to be like that, I never really save my money because how ever much I have to spare I would rather use that money on traveling and expanding my mind and life experiences then saving it away for something else. To me, we are all going to die and when we do, we are all going to die without the money so I'd rather use it and enjoy my earnings while I'm alive and see more of the world I live in.
IN TERMS OF WORKING TWO JOBS, WITH YOUR EMBROIDERY WORK AND WORKING AT THE RESTAURANT - HOW DO YOU FIND BALANCE WITH WORKING BACK TO BACK SHIFTS ALL DAY?
I smoke weed - not in the morning because I like to give all my focus on my work. I like to smoke weed just before I leave the house to take the train to my other job, it makes the ride so much easier. And after work, I’ll smoke with my friends that I work with, then when I come home just before bed with my husband.
HOW DOES IT AFFECT YOU POSITIVELY?
You know when you are high and you think you have the best conversations with people? Thats what I like, I like the feeling of connecting with people on another level, a more spiritual level. Especially for me, I’m from France and English wasn’t my first language so sometimes I can’t connect or express myself as fluently and I get frustrated, but with weed it helps me connect more with that.
It makes me mellow and more quiet but open minded. It doesn’t make me anxious although in the beginning it used too but then you get past that and it starts to unlock new passages in thinking and your imagination. I was an anxious person before I started smoking. I was always so self conscious and was biting my nails, touching my hair or scratching my body. Never being still or present, thinking about so many different things constantly with unnecessary worries and thoughts. I dont sleep well so smoking weed helps me a lot. The way I look at it - I would rather smoke weed - something that is natural and from the earth than take pharmaceuticals like sleeping pills or Xanax.
I FEEL LIKE MORE AND MORE PEOPLE RELY SO HEAVILY ON SYNTHETIC PHARMACEUTICALS AND MANMADE DRUGS TO FIX EVEN THE MENIAL OF PROBLEMS - AND AT SUCH AN ALARMING RATE. IS IT IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO CONSCIOUSLY TAKE THINGS THAT ARE NATURAL AND FROM THE EARTH RATHER THAN SYNTHETICALLY PROCESSED/MANMADE DRUGS?
Yes definitely, I think when it grows from the earth it can only be good for you. The Indians and peyote and many other different cultures and traditional practices - if it is natural and traditional it can only be better for you than something made and packaged in a lab.
I KNOW YOU COME FROM A DIFFERENT LIFE AND BACKGROUND FROM WHEN YOU WERE LIVING IN PARIS. WAS THERE EVER A POINT IN YOUR LIFE WHERE YOU FELT YOU WERE LIVING OUT OF ALIGNMENT AND SAW YOUR BODY REACT AS A RESULT?
Yeah, when I was living in Paris I was working in high fashion with Colette and my body was physically unhappy and I was about 10 or more kilograms heavier. I feel like because I was unhappy and going against the current of what my true self really wanted from me and my life, I started eating all these different foods for pleasure, to suffocate and distract myself from what was really present. I wasn’t doing any forms of exercise and now I see your body is smarter than what you give it credit for and it balances out everything in due time.
I THINK IT HAS A LOT TO DO WITH OUR STATE OF MIND AND MENTAL HEALTH THAN WE ARE AWARE OR GIVE IT CREDIT FOR. WHEN YOU FIND MENTAL PEACE, YOUR BODY FOLLOWS NATURALLY. THE TWO ARE SO HEAVILY CONNECTED, ONE CANNOT FUNCTION WITHOUT THE SUPPORT OF THE OTHER.
Yeah, when you’re happy, you and your body naturally crave foods that your body wants to eat and that are going to be good for you. I moved to New York and married my husband Chris and found balance. I shed all the weight off naturally. I never restricted or dieted - because that mentality is what makes you unhappy. When you mentally prohibit yourself from eating something you want to eat, you are telling your body you don’t trust it. When you are happy your body will tell you what it wants and you must allow it. If you are ever like “oh I can’t eat this because I am going to gain weight”, your body is not going to accept it and you will gain weight. The power of the mind while eating is really important - to sit with the food and invite it into your body with love, then your body will work with you and work it all out for you.
WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU ABOUT HEALTH AND THE ACT OF LIVING?
For me, my 2015 resolution was to be better and eat more and to spend more time with the people I love. To work but not overwork myself and to find that equal balance between work, pleasure and love. Its hard when you have a family and you are at the age where you also want to build your own family and then on top of that you live in a city like New York where you’re hustling like everyone else.
Reading is important also, expanding your knowledge spiritually, reading books about different spiritual beliefs and religions. Travelling to a spiritual place or reading about it, to be in touch with that world in whatever form it may be.
Love is important, and not love for somebody, but love for everybody. We have to love everybody. To love yourself first, then you will attract more like minded people who are vibrating on your frequency. You can always tell when someone is happy, you want to be in that persons energy field. Just try and love yourself, that is key. Try and open your mind, read more, take psychedelics, unlock new doors in your mind, listen to good music. Those things have all changed my life.
I believe in god, I don’t know if its Jesus, Buddha or whoever, but I believe in something bigger than ourselves. In the universe - I believe in nature, that is my god.
I THINK INDULGENCES, WHETHER IT BE SEX, FOOD OR WHATEVER ELSE, IS ALSO REALLY IMPORTANT FOR OUR BALANCE. NOT TO BE SO MILITANT IN OUR WAYS AND RELAX A LITTLE - WHAT WOULD BE INDULGENCES YOU ENJOY AND HOW OFTEN WOULD YOU INDULGE?
I don’t really have any indulgences, I feel like my life is about balance. I don’t ever go in extremes and I'm getting older and wiser and now I know my body pretty well and what it can and can’t handle. So for me its about balance - I can smoke weed but not in the morning, I can eat sweets but in moderation because my body won’t be able to handle much of it afterwards. I just work all those indulgences into my everyday life but through balance and moderation. And sex? I mean sex can never be too much, it will always be good for you.
WHAT IS BEAUTY TO YOU? DEFINE BEAUTIFUL?
Smart and funny people. Pretty people also but I would rather have a good conversation with someone because I feel like you share more by laughing with someone than talking. Beauty to me is more like who you are than how you look. Because how we all look is going to fade away in time. I mean I’m thirty years old now and you realise more real stuff. I had surgery on my face last year and I was stressed out in the beginning of how it was going to scar and how it will look but now I don’t really care for it. The scar is now a part of me and my face and I’m not perfect and never wanted to be anyway. Youth fades, beauty fades, you can’t hold onto that. The inner work is important, that is whats most important.
